38 years ago today, in 1974, a group of Portuguese military officers overthrew the fascist dictatorship that had ruled in Portugal for 36 years. It is refered to as the Carnation Revolution or the 25th of April. The name “Carnation Revolution” comes from its pacific character and the fact that the population started descending the streets of Lisbon to celebrate, mixing with the revolutionary soldiers and putting red carnation flowers on their guns’ ends and on their uniforms.
